NOTIS’ Community Interpreters Division presents

Sorry, Not Sorry! How Interpreters Can Mediate with Confidence and Skill

Presented by Marisa Rueda Will, CHI

Course Description
Medical interpreters are required to interpret everything that is said during a medical encounter. To accomplish this, interpreters need to manage the flow of conversation efficiently. They also need to discern when it is appropriate to mediate and when to stay in their interpreting role. Ideally, healthcare interpreters should mediate only when necessary and do so briefly. However, mediation is not an easy skill to master.

Over time, professional medical interpreters with an advanced skill set can perform a strategic mediation confidently and skillfully. They follow criteria that helps them know if a strategic mediation is necessary. When they do need to mediate, they keep the mediation brief and resume interpreting immediately. Performing a strategic mediation efficiently preserves the communicative autonomy of each party in the session.

Developing advanced strategic mediation skills will improve the quality of your interpretation. You will be able to mediate without interrupting the speaker’s train of thought and without drawing attention to yourself. You will be able to ask for what you need to do your job succinctly, without apologizing for it. Strategic mediation is a skill you can use during every encounter. Enhancing this skillset will make a significant difference in each interpreting assignment.

Learning Objectives
1.     Define mediation, strategic mediation, cultural mediation, and advocacy.
2.     Identify the five steps for performing a strategic mediation.
3.     Learn the four criteria for strategic mediation.
4.     Recognize techniques to improve strategic mediation skills based on the four criteria for strategic mediation.
5.     Reflect on and/or discuss your experience performing a strategic or cultural mediation during an interpreting encounter.
6.     Acknowledge how effective strategic mediation can enhance your ability to manage the flow of conversation and make you a better interpreter.

So, while there may be some PowerPoint and lecture, this is not like your typical webinar. Your full attention and participation is expected; that’s what makes it fun!

This workshop will be recorded. The recording will be available for a month after the webshop. You will receive a video link, handouts and presentation slides with steps on how to receive a certificate if you missed the webshop.
