STIBC: Canadian Writing Style

The Canadian Style gives concise answers to questions concerning written English in the Canadian context. It covers such topics as the decimal point, abbreviations, capital letters, punctuation marks, hyphenation, spelling, frequently misused or confused words and Canadian geographical names. It also includes useful advice for drafting letters, memos, reports, indexes and bibliographies.

In addition, The Canadian Style includes techniques for writing clearly and concisely, editing documents, and avoiding stereotyping in communications.

This workshop will provide an overview of the Canadian Style website and will focus on particular sections.

  • Hyphenation: Compounding and Word Division

Coreen Boucher is a freelance editor, writer and instructor and is the founder of Lucent Edits. She specializes in theses, dissertations, and academic articles in the APA style and in editing and indexing nonfiction books. She runs a mentorship program for editors to learn APA editing and application of the finer details of the APA style. After three years teaching in Asia, she now volunteers as a tutor with ESL learners. She currently studies communications and works with nonprofits to develop communications strategy.
