NOTIS Community Interpreters Division presents

Interpreting for the Injured Worker

What is this? The purpose of this six-hour workshop is to help interpreters improve their knowledge of the terminology needed to accurately and successfully interpret for injured workers. This workshop will help healthcare interpreters as well as court interpreters who work in workers’ compensation cases and depositions.

What you will learn:

  • Types of injuries (specific, cumulative, stress-related, etc.);
  • The language of the worker (types of jobs, tasks, tools, machinery, etc.);
  • Comprehensive and detailed description of medical conditions resulting from work injuries: orthopedic (shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, back disorders, knee, ankle), chronic pain, mental health disorders;
  • Types of treatment (PT, pain management, medications, psychological, FRP, etc.);
  • Overview of the workers’ compensation system (medical-legal evaluations, parties involved, disability rating, apportionment, C&R, MMI, stipulation, utilization review, etc.);
  • Interpreting in depositions for injured workers;
  • Challenges for interpreters and cultural considerations.

This will be an interactive and engaging workshop. There will be ample opportunities to review specific vocabulary, scenarios, and practice consecutive interpretation though role-plays and mini-dialogues. Participants will receive glossaries and study materials to practice after the workshop.
