Interpreting for Addiction Services
Presented by Cindy Roat

What is it about?
This is a 4-hour synchronous online workshop, designed for experienced interpreters, that will prepare learners to provide interpreting services for patients being seen at Addiction Services, their families and the providers who serve them.

Learning objectives:

After taking this class, participants will be able to:

  • Define addiction and differentiate between addiction and physical dependence.

  • Describe the key types of substance use disorder treatment, including medically based treatment, counseling and harm reduction strategies.
  • Accurately interpret common terms and utterances commonly used in communications around substance use diagnosis and treatment in medical and social service settings.

Topics:

  • Introduction to addiction and substance use disorder, including the diagnostic process and treatment options.
  • What interpreters can expect at medical and social service with patients and families who are living with substance use disorder.
  • Specialized terminology in addiction services commonly used in medical and social service settings.
  • Practice with vocabulary and linguistic conversion between English and a non-English language.  
  • Special challenges for the interpreter.

  • A copy of the PowerPoint presentation.
  • English vocabulary exercises
  • Conversion exercises
  • A glossary of terms used in addiction services.

Saturday, September 7th, 2024, 8 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. PST.

Registration?
Via the web (five days before the webshop date). After registering, you will receive an email confirmation; if you do not receive a confirmation, your registration did not go through. Registration will open after June 2024.

Who is teaching?

Cindy Roat is a national consultant and trainer with 29 years’ experience in the healthcare interpreting field. With an MPH in International Health Services, Cindy has made significant contributions to the healthcare interpreting field in the areas of training, program development, policy formulation, advocacy, and organizational outreach. Her written works are key resources for interpreters, providers, and administrators alike. Cindy was the principal author of the original Bridging the Gap, and her most recent book, Healthcare Interpreting in Small Bites, is being used as an ancillary text at many basic training programs. 

Certificates of Attendance will be awarded to all who arrive on time and stay for the entire workshop. Please allow yourself enough time to log on and sign in before the webshop begins. While latecomers are welcome to stay for the educational value of the webshop, DSHS will not provide CE credit if you arrive late, for any reason. Certificate will be emailed the following week. 

Refunds?
No refunds can be given after September 2nd. A $15 processing fee will apply for refunds requested before the date. Contact the NOTIS office manager for cancellation. Credit for a missed workshop cannot be transferred to another workshop. No refunds will be given for reasons unrelated to this content, such as an unstable internet connection, issues with third-party applications, not receiving reminders, or problems with system requirements.
